Antonio Rosa was born in Italy in 1967. His father, a painter, encouraged his artistic sensibility at a very young age; as a small boy he expressed the desire to follow in his footsteps. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Paris from 1991 to 1995 and at the Académie Saint-Roch for several years with the painter Jean Bertholle. What he learned there went well beyond technical know-how. As the artist puts it, he learned how to "feel painting". Mr. Rosa won several contemporary art awards in France and Italy. Travelling back and forth between both sides of the Alps, working in the studio as well as outdoors, Mr. Rosa has produced an extraordinarily prolific output. With incomparable spontaneity, he quite simply paints everything he sees in his immediate surroundings, from landscapes to city views, artists’ workshops, crowds, portraits and nudes. He never rules anything out to make his art, from oil to gouache, ink to charcoal, canvas to Japanese paper, cardboard to brown wrapping paper, brushes to pens, and knives to fingers. He dismisses nothing and uses everything to express his sensitivity, forging ahead as though driven by vital necessity. With his demanding gaze Mr. Rosa tirelessly seeks this changing, because it is living, reality, or a possible translation, of being a seer of the world’s colours and movements.
